Emptiness Stays in the Mirror
A gallery installation consisting of luminous sculptures made out of expired 16mm film stocks. The uniform, minimalist sculptures consist of hand processed film that is either black (overexposed), clear (bleached) or white (“lightstruck”). In repurposing the materials of film production and exhibition, the sculptures decontextualize the processes of filmmaking and film projection. Although the filmstrips are devoid of photorealistic illusions, the fundamentals of cinema as light, shadow and movement remain at the centre of this work.
